Darmesteter, Arsene

   French philol-ogist, brother of James Darmesteter. He was born at Chateau-Salins. He was appointed lecturer in French language and literature at the Sorbonne in 1877 and also taught at the Ecole Rabbinique. He was a founder of the Societe de Etudes Juives and the Revue des Etudes Juives. His writings include a dictionary of 11th-century French, based on medieval Jewish commentators, and a dictionary of Rashi's French glosses in his commentaries on the Bible and the Talmud.
